I do my own laundry detergent. Is there anything that can substitute for borax?

I have a recipe for laundry detergent homemade. But I saw that borax can cause skin allergies, rashes and other things. This would be bad for my children, who use cloth diapers. Is there anything else I can use?

Cut the borax amount by half and add granular water softener.
