Dermatitis is a general term for inflammation of the skin. Most types of dermatitis is characterized by a red rash, itching. There are many different common forms of dermatitis.
Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction to something that irritates the skin causing itchy red skin high points. It is usually evident within one or two days after coming into contact with something to which the skin is more sensitive.
Dermatitis contact can affect any part of the body but most commonly affects the hands, feet and groin. Not usually spread from person to person spread more nor beyond the contact area unless the skin comes into contact with an affected area of the body. An exception to the rule would be poison ivy that can be transferred between people.
Nummular dermatitis, also known as nummular eczema, generally affects the hands, arms, legs and buttocks of men and women over 55 years of age. This condition causes an itchy rash, which occurs in circular patches. This type of dermatitis can erupt seemingly without cause after long downtime. The cause of nummular dermatitis is unknown, but it usually occurs during the cold season and is more common in people with dry skin. Stress can also be a contributing factor.
Atopic dermatitis is characterized by itching, swelling and in some cases, blisters. In early childhood is called infantile eczema and is characterized by redness, oozing and crusting. It is usually found around the face, elbows and knees and behind the knees. Babies also tend to experience seborrheic dermatitis. This is usually characterized by greasy scales and yellowish crusts on the scalp, eyebrows, ears, chest and abdomen and is commonly called cradle cap.
Allergic reactions can cause contact dermatitis. A reaction to poison ivy and poison sumac is a of the most common causes of symptoms. Flowers, herbs and vegetables can also have different effects on different people. Others may have reactions to products chlorine chemicals like detergents and soaps, adhesives for artificial nails, colognes and deodorants.
The diagnosis of dermatitis is based on the location and appearance of the rash. The doctor may take a small sample of skin affected by laboratory testing or microscopic examination. Patients with skin rashes severe are instructed to avoid all possible causes of the eruption including soaps and deodorants until symptoms disappear. Then, these elements can be slowly reintroduced one at a time to try to determine what may be the cause of dermatitis. Doctors can also perform patch tests in which small testing different amounts of potential irritants rubbed into the patient.
Treating contact dermatitis begins with avoiding the source of irritation. Prescription Corticosteroid creams or counter creams may be given to try to reduce inflammation and relieve itching. Oral Antihistamines can also be used to to stop itching.
